Play it again Sam…

Yesterday in the wee small hours of the morning the latest addition to the Whyte family arrived

Samuel Alexander Whyte

He was born around 3:00am, weighing 7 pounds and approx 50cm long

(Sorry about the vagueness of the stats but that’s all I was given)

Sam continues the tradition of an all-boy family joining his brothers Michael, Lachlan, William and cousins Seth, Callum, and Jack and cousin-in-law Toby.

We’ll be popping down to visit Rachel, Ged, Sam and the gang on the weekend.

Well done Rach & Ged….

Activate the wayback machine….

As you probably known my employer IceTV have been fighting for 3 years now against the Nine network in a totally bogus attempt to misuse copyright law as a weapon against a company they saw as a threat.

We won the first round in August 2007 after an 8 month wait for the judgement.

Nine appealed to the Full Court of the Federal Court in February 2008 and won, overturning the earlier ruling in a verdict delivered in May 2008.

We sought and were immediately given special leave to appeal to the High Court of Australia, we presented our case in October 2008.

At 10:15am this morning the High Court delivered their verdict overturning Nine’s appeal and reinstating the original verdict, we have also been awarded costs for the three court cases.

As you can imagine this comes as a massive relief.

After three years living under a cloud we are finally emerging into the sunlight.

2009 is set to be a great year for IceTV and we are all excited about the possibilities ahead of us…

Watch this space ;)

Here are some links to the many articles about the verdict….

IceTV wins High Court decision – freezes Nine!

I thought this was a free country

After 38 years of living in what I believed to be a free country you can imagine my outrage when I came across stories about the Rudd government’s latest brainwave

Minister welcomes advances in internet filtering technology

(Computerworld have a good piece on it)

It would appear that like people in China, Burma and North Korea, we need to be protected from the big bad internet by means of ISP level OPT OUT filters!!!

Ahh, you say, you can Opt Out if you feel strongly about it, and yes we can… In theory…

There will be two blacklists

* Content unsafe for children (on by default)

* “Illegal” content (on for ALL with NO OPT OUT)

Now, I hear you ask “What’s wrong with blocking illegal content?”…

Well, that boils down to a question of who decides what is or isn’t legal in the context of the internet?

Should the government prevent me from researching nuclear energy? I could learn how to make a bomb… What about abortion? or Euthanasia? or making Gunpowder?

Is knowledge illegal or the improper use of it?

Mandatory filtering puts us on a very slippery slope indeed.

Even forgoing the illegal content blacklist, what about the “unsafe for children” blacklist, which children?

What if a child wants to learn about sexually transmitted diseases, is that bad? Time and time again attempts to generate blacklists have tended to block access to sites that are totally appropriate for children, often sites offering educational material for children on sexual health issues.

I am utterly against this kind of censorship and I feel it is totally inappropriate for the government to decide on my (and my children’s) behalf what I can and can’t be allowed to see. Bulk filtering of internet content is a total waste of time, money and energy, the “right” way to tackle this problem is to steer clear of the “quick fix” and fall back on Education.

Give people the information they need to understand the internet, and be able to make informed decisions on what they see or don’t see.

Let parents decide what is best for their children.

The dangers to children on the internet are not stumbling across porn, but rather chatting to the wrong people, giving out their personal details, etc
These are not the sorts of things that can be blocked with a filter.

In today’s society we always want to push responsibility (and blame) on to someone else, well it’s time to stand up and say NO….

Please visit the NoCleenFeed site setup by the EFA and take a stand, once something like this is in place it is hard to remove, your chance to nip it in the bud is now…….

Happy Birthday Toby

On the 24th of May 2008 at 4:14pm we welcomed yet another member to the extended Drysdale Collective.

My brother-in-law and his wife took delivery of their first child

Toby George Micheal

The labour and delivery went well and mother and baby are well, in fact they are home now and getting used to the new living arrangements.

Toby’s statistics are

Weight: 3.385kg
Length: 51cm
Head: 35.5cm

We wish Victor and Jen all the best with little Toby and look forward many years of adventures with him.

This brings the roster of cousins to

Connor, Michael, Lachlan, William, Jack and now Toby….

As you can image Seth and Callum are stoked at having yet another playmate.

It's All Ours (*)

As you know from a previous post, we’ve been struggling through the process of buying our first home.

At approx 12:00pm today, we became the owners(*) of our own home!!!!!

Please feel free to pop around, no invite required, just give us a call to make sure we’re home (as if we wouldn’t be) and that the kids aren’t chucking a wobbly….

(*) Technically speaking the bank owns the house and are letting us live here while we pay them an enormous amount of money :)

Home Sweet Home

As some of you are no doubt aware we have, for the last few months, been working through the process of buying our first house.
Two weeks ago we moved into the new place, we’re paying the current owners rent for the rest of the settlement period.

We formally take ownership of the place in 8 days, and counting…

The process has been long, arduous and frustrating, but the prize makes it well worth the trouble.

Here is a picture of the place.

With a bit of luck we will be able to put down roots and settle in for a while.

I feel dirty….

Some helpful person posted a comment on my blog to tell me that I had a phishing scam running from my machine, and sure enough with a little digging I can see that their was indeed some rather nasty stuff sitting in a hidden directory in my brother-in-laws user account.

It looks like there were two different scams running, one for PayPal and one for Chase Bank.

I’ve removed the user account and moved the directory and I’ll have a poke around a bit later.

One thing I will say is that I feel violated and embarrased to think that my machine has been used to aid these theiving bastards.

Out of interest, here is the directory listings of the directories added to my machine.

The Mouse That Roared

Well, I don’t know what to make of this one…

Disney Buys Pixar

After years of less then stellar relations culminating in a mutual agreement to go their separate ways, Pixar and Disney seem set to tie the knot…

Disney has apparently bought Pixar in a stock transfer worth somewhere around
US$ 7.4 BILLION

This deal will make Steve Jobs, Co-founder Chairman and CEO of Pixar (as well as Co-founder and CEO of Apple Computers) the single largest shareholder in Disney

Only time will tell what the implications will be for Pixar, they will be expanding their role from just movies to movies, theme parks etc so it will be an exciting time for them.

For us, we get more movies like "Toy Story", "A Bug’s Life", "Toy Story 2", "Finding Nemo" and "The Incredibles" so I’m happy.
