iPhone Downunder

Thanks to the magic of Salary Sacrifice and a friend on holidays in the US, I decided to buy myself a Birthday Present…

The Jesus Phone aka iPhone……

The phone arrived with firmware 1.0.2, I followed an excellent set of instructions at

http://www.winandmac.com/mobile/iphone/ultimate-guide-to-unlock-iphone-111-for-free/

to upgrade it to 1.1.1, jailbreak, activate and unlock it. I’m using it happily on Vodafone and all functions are working just fine. The only problems I have are that my custom ringtone keeps disappearing and the 24 hour time setting randomly turns off.

The phone is dangerous, once you play with it you will NEED one, it’s no wonder they sold 1.12 Million units last quarter. Not bad for a first entry into an insanely competitive market….

I’ve got two words for you – AWE and SOME.

It is freaking cool – easily the coolest gadget I’ve ever held. Although I’m not nearly as switched on as you when it comes to these things, I did get a pang in my groin when I played with yours (your iPhone that is, lest people get the wrong idea).

On the strength of my description of your iPhone to my boss, he made me buy two of them from eBay on the spot (it was uncharacteristicly impuslive of him) . Who knows, perhaps one is for me … in any case, I’ll have one to play with myself next week.

I just wish it had 80+ MB of solid state memory, then I would truly want one. Give it two years, and 80MB solid state will seem puny.

Who would have believed it? I am posting this from an iPhone – though it’s not mine unfortunately 🙁

  3. Has it lived up to all the hype?

I don’t know that any product can live up to the hype that the industry generates around any product from Apple. In this sense they are a victim of their own success…

What I can say is that I have owned at least a dozen phones going all the way back to 1990 and this phone is by far the most fun to use, I find myself surfing the net and reading my mail routinely while watching TV every night. I spend far more time actually using this phone than any other phone I’ve ever owned…

I can’t wait for the official Oz launch so I can get one with a decent data plan (I hope) and then be able to use it to its full capacity.
